When planning a trip, most travelers think about passports, accommodations and activities but what about medications? As a professional vacation planner, I always advise my clients to pack essential over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications before heading abroad. Here’s why:

1. Over-the-Counter Medications May Not Be Available

Not all countries have the same OTC medications you’re used to. Even common remedies for allergies, headaches or stomach issues may be unavailable or sold under different brand names. Bringing essentials like pain relievers, antihistamines, anti-nausea tablets and cold medicine ensures you have what you need when you need it.

2. Prescription Medications Require Extra Precautions

If you take prescription medication, pack at least a one-week extra supply in case of travel delays. Additionally, bring a printed copy of your prescription that includes the generic name of the drug. This is important because brand names can vary and a local pharmacist will need the exact details to provide the correct medication and dosage if you need a refill.

3. Avoid Customs Issues

Some countries have strict regulations on certain medications even if they’re common in your home country. To avoid any issues at customs:

  • Keep medications in their original packaging.
  • Carry a doctor’s note if your medication contains controlled substances.
  • Research local regulations before departure.

Final Thought: Be Prepared AND ALWAYS CARRY YOUR MEDICINES IN YOUR CARRY ON BAG!

Traveling should be a stress-free experience and having the right medications on hand can save you from unnecessary hassle. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your health and comfort while exploring new destinations!
