We recently talked about the importance of staying hydrated during these sizzling summer months – but what about our four-legged family members? Our pets are feeling the heat too and they’re relying on us to help keep them cool, hydrated and safe.
Here’s how to be the best paw-rent this summer:
💧 Hydration Nation (For Pets!)
Just like us, pets need extra fluids in hot weather. But unlike us, they can’t exactly ask for a refill.
Here’s how to keep their tails wagging and tongues wet:
- Always have fresh water available. Indoors and outdoors. Refill bowls frequently, especially after playtime.
- Add ice cubes to their bowls for a refreshing twist. Bonus: it’s fun to watch them chase it around!
- Wet their food. Mix a little water or pet-safe bone broth into kibble to sneak in extra hydration.
- Pet popsicles! Freeze low-sodium broth, unsweetened yogurt, or watermelon puree into silicone molds. Instant summer treat!
🐾 Protect Those Precious Paws
Would you walk barefoot on hot pavement in July? Neither should they.
Paw-sitive protection tips:
- Do the hand test: Place your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pup!
- Walk early or late: Aim for early morning or after sundown strolls when the ground is cooler.
- Stick to shady routes or grass. Parks or sidewalks.
- Paw wax or booties: Yes, doggy shoes exist and yes, they’re adorable and effective.
🚿 Bonus Tip: Cool Down Playtime
A kiddie pool, a gentle mist from a hose or even frozen toys can turn backyard time into a pup-approved splash zone.
Bottom line? Hydration and pawtection = a safer, happier summer for your furry BFF. Now go give your pet a big ol’ belly rub and maybe share a sip from your water bottle. (Just don’t tell the vet. 😉)
